Joe Paterno, 85, passed away Sunday morning due to complications from lung cancer.
The former Penn State coach was the all-time leader in wins in Division I history with 409, was credited with a pair of national championships (1986 & 1994), and finished five of his 46 seasons with an undefeated record. In addition the man who turned Penn State’s football program in “Linebacker U” produced 27 consensus All-Americans, including nine linebackers.
Unfortunately for Paterno, his pristine legacy was tainted in the eyes of some for not doing enough when longtime former assistant Jerry Sandusky was charged with a number of crimes involving minors. Paterno, who was fired in November 2011, called the Sandusky situation “one of the great sorrows of my life.”
