To provide assistance to people at risk of losing their properties, a foreclosure prevention town hall meeting will be held in White Plains Aug. 3, outside 11 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Foreclosure experts will be on hand to give free consultation to worried homeowners.
The experts will provide information about federal programs that can help with mortgage payments, general information, and information about obtaining loan modifications. They can also help property owners file complaints against and seek resolutions with banks and other loan services.
State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins is co-hosting the event with the Department of Financial Services and state Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer.
“Many financially troubled homeowners may not realize that help is available, and others may be too embarrassed to come forward. But the sooner they act the more options they have,” Stewart-Cousins said in the event posting.
In June, 40,413 properties went into foreclosure in New York state, according to Realty Trac. New York’s June foreclosures made up 2.6 percent of the more than 1.5 million nationwide.
Manhattan Clinics
In the city, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and MFY Legal Services hosted a free housing issues legal workshop Monday evening. Free legal clinics, for people with housing court cases, will also run Aug. 20, Sept. 17, and Oct. 15, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at 163 W. 125th St., Second Floor. MFY will address general housing issues and residents’ rights. Appointments are required.
