NEW YORK—The cloudy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the hundreds of foodies who came out to celebrate the 17th annual “Harvest in the Square” on Thursday evening at Union Square.
Country tunes from “The Nashville Attitude” serenaded guests as they walked the red carpet-lined tents filled with the colorful sights and delicious smells of 50 of the top-rated gourmet restaurants from the Union Square area.
There was food to fit every palette, such as Indian food by Devi, Mexican food by Rosa Mexicano, and even a mac-and-cheese hotdog by Big Daddy.
Tommy Mosera, owner of Tommy Lasagna on 18th Street, served up vegetarian lasagna made with vegetables sold from the Union Square Greenmarket. Mosera, whose restaurant has only been open 10 months, said he takes pride in using Greenmarket veggies and fresh made pasta.
Thirsty guests sampled both red and white wines from 20 New York state wineries, including Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars, which is celebrating 50 years of winemaking in Hammondsport, N.Y.
Money raised from the event will go to the Union Square Partnership, which will put the money back into the Union Square park and neighborhood. Funds will be used for planting greenery, more flower beds, general park maintenance, and a 15,000-square-foot state-of-the-art playground.
