The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning for New York City Wednesday at 7:43 a.m.

Affected areas include Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Hudson County in New Jersey.

Shortly before the warning was issued, the NWS radars indicated flash flooding from thunderstorms training over the area.

NWS meteorologist Lauren Nash says the highest chance of flooding is at 9:15 a.m.

“The storms are moving northeast, away from the city ... but sometimes flash flooding can linger,” says Nash.

The storms could cause flooding of streets, underpasses, highways, and low-lying areas due to run off. The expected rainfall is 1–1.5 inches, and the storms are moving northwest at 20 mph.

The NWS warns: “Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground.”
