LSU edged out Alabama for the top spot by .0003 points in the first Bowl Championship Series (BCS) poll, released on Sunday. Oklahoma, which has spent time at the top of the AP poll this season, was ranked third, while Oklahoma State, and Boise State rounded out the top five spots.

Arkansas and Oregon were the only teams in the top ten with one loss. Oregon lost to LSU to open the season and Arkansas lost to Alabama in week four.

Kansas State, who has quietly gone undefeated this season, surprised some by earning the eleventh spot. Their ranking will be tested when they face Oklahoma and Oklahoma State back to back starting October 29. If they can remain undefeated through these games, they should easily earn a top five spot.

LSU and Alabama will play each other on Nov. 5 and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will play each other Dec. 3, the final game of the season. This could open the door for the other undefeated teams, such as Boise State, Wisconsin, and Clemson.

The BCS standings take into account the coaches poll, a Harris Poll, and an average of six computer rankings. Each component counts one-third toward a team’s overall BCS score.
