Fernando Alonso increased his lead in his quest for a third World Driver’s Championship by winning the Formula One German Grand Prix Sunday. The Ferrari driver started from the pole and only surrendered the lead during pit stops, though he was hotly pursued by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and McLaren’s Jenson Button in different phases of the race.
Button started sixth and advanced steadily, to eventually finish third; after the race he was awarded second. Vettel started and finished second, but he had to drive off the course to pass the McLaren driver in the closing laps of the race, demoting him to fifth. This moved Lotus driver Kimi Raikonnen up to third.
Alonso now has 154 points. Red Bull’s Mark Webber trails with 120, Vettel with 110. Raikonnen moved into fourth with 98.
McLaren had another up-and-down day. This time Lewis Hamilton ran over some debris and cut a tire on lap three, and spent the rest of the race mired in the mid-pack.
