Feminist Taylor Swift, a Twitter account started by a university student, turns lyrics of the popular singer into feminist messages.
The account, @FeministTSwift, has gone viral this week, posting Swift’s lyrics with its own feminist own slant. “Happy. Free. Confused. Oppressed by the patriarchy. At the same time,” reads the Twitter account bio. It also features a picture of Rosie the Riveter with Swift’s face photoshopped onto it.
Buzzfeed reported that the account was started by Clara Beyer, a Brown University senior, who is in charge of “That Girl Magazine.”
“I consider myself a feminist, and I blog about that kind of thing all the time, but I also LOVE Taylor Swift,” Beyer told the website. “Being a feminist Taylor Swift fan isn’t always easy, but it led to @FeministTSwift, so I’m not really complaining.”
She added: “My fantasy is that this Twitter account gets so many followers that she tweets at us.”
Her first tweet, sent out on June 12, was “she wears short skirts / I wear T-shirts / Neither of us is asking for it.” According to the Washington Post, it was the changed lyrics to Swift‘s “You Belong With Me.”
As of Monday, the account has already got more than 73,000 followers.
