The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will reimburse New York State 90 percent of its Hurricane Sandy related reimbursable public assistance costs, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
FEMA typically only reimburses 75 percent, but made an exception due to the severity and magnitude of Sandy’s devastation.
“Sandy’s impact on New York State has been significant in every way, but its fiscal impact on local and state government has been particularly damaging,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement.
“By reaching this federal funding threshold for post-storm recovery costs, the financial impact will be lowered considerably for the non-federal share of repairing and restoring our communities.
The cumulative costs for Hurricane Sandy is $189 million, which includes $91 million for overtime, cash, and comp-time, according to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. While at a City Council hearing, Kelly said FEMA had reimbursed the city $105 million to date.
