While Father’s Day may not be as big as Mother’s Day, the number of people looking for gifts and cards to send on Father’s Day has steadily increased over the years.
Mother’s Day, as a day to celebrate and wish mothers for their bearing and looking after children, was a tradition that grew popular in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Father’s Day is believed to have first been celebrated in the United States in Virginia state in about 1907, about 40 years after the first proclamation of Mother’s Day. Almost 60 years later, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation for it.
The holiday is an international one and is celebrated in countries around the world. It has recently become more of a phenomenon, particularly with the number of working and independent women rising. Young working women are reported to be particularly using the occasion to present gifts for their fathers.
While Father’s Day will be celebrated on June 19th in 2011 in many countries, particularly in the West and in Middle East, a more traditional cultural day for fathers is celebrated more quietly in other countries.
Father’s Day Gifts and Cards
And among the gifts for fathers? While a bouquet of flowers might have sufficied for Mother’s Day, the choice of gifts for Father’s Day has traditionally been along more manly lines. Recommended and favorite gifts for fathers are ties, pens, wristwatches, and lately, electronics items such as computers and even smartphone and tablets.
Of course, a rise in sales of greeting cards indicates that most families that may not be able to afford the more expensive gifts can always show their love for Dad in a more traditional and low-key way, with personalized greeting cards.
