NEW YORK—The FASTRACK program, in which subway workers clean trash from tracks and do other rehab while lines are closed on four consecutive weeknights, will expand in 2013.
Different portions of subway lines have been shut down from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. over the past year from Sunday to Thursday night. The new program cuts costs ($17 million saved so far) and increases productivity, according to the MTA, in part because workers don’t have to worry about trains passing by them while they’re working.
“Over the past year, we have found this to be an extremely effective way to maintain a subway system that operates around the clock, seven days a week,” said NYC Transit President Thomas F. Prendergast in a statement. “We have seen concrete benefits in the way the system is being maintained through FASTRACK and we are now ready to roll it out to other line segments.”
In 2013, FASTRACK line corridors include: the N, Q, and R lines south of Queensboro Plaza to Court Street, the A line between 168th Street and 207th Street, and the 6 line between 45th and 100th Streets.
A project to pilot daytime work on outdoor segments will be conducted during weekends on the D and Q lines between Coney Island Creek Bridge and the North Stillwell Interlocking. The agency will see if FASTRACK will work on these outdoor segments.
The MTA makes sure it has travel alternatives lined up for riders, including temporary bus service, according to its release.
