KITCHENER-WATERLOO, Canada— Blair Kelly brought eight family members to see the Shen Yun Performing Arts performance at Centre in the Square theatre on Tuesday night—and they were all impressed.

“It was great, unbelievable,” said Mr. Kelly, who owns a construction company.

“It was definitely something to experience, from the beginning to the end. The costumes, the dance—stuff we’ve never seen before, stuff we never knew. My whole family enjoyed it, it was really something else. It was great.”

Mr. Kelly said it was “very thrilling” when the curtain rose for the opening scene, An Era Begins, to reveal a regiment of celestial soldiers, preparing for a battle between good and evil.

New York-based Shen Yun features a rebirth of traditional Chinese culture through the medium of classical Chinese dance. One of the oldest dance systems in the world, Chinese dance stresses refinement of inner character as well as physical technique in order to achieve perfection.

“It’s a beautiful art form,” said Mr. Kelly.

“With the music and the dance together it was just beautiful, it’s something you don’t see here, and we don’t get to experience enough of it.”

He said he would “tell everyone that it was a great show.”

“We‘ll be singing praises about it, and anyone we talk to we’ll definitely be saying that they should go and see it, because it’s worth your while to see it, that’s for sure.”

“We’re just going to go home and be happy. ... It’s just a good experience.”

Shen Yun will be in Kitchener-Waterloo for one more performance before heading to Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts for a five-show run.
