According to the English language version of Xinhua, the official Chinese state mouthpiece, a blast rocked a railway station in Urumqi, the capital of the northwestern province of Xinjiang, on Wednesday evening.
Xinhua says that the explosion took place at the south railway station in the city. Ambulances and police vehicles swarmed, while police cordoned off the station, began evacuating travelers, and suspended train service. Xinhua provided no other details about the incident.
The timing of the blast comes just following a tour of the province by Xi Jinping, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party.
