With the launch of anti-corruption helpline number in the national capital, corrupt Indian officials got a new thorn in their sides. The two-day-old helpline got an overwhelming response, receiving 4,000 calls in just seven hours.
“This announcement makes every citizen of Delhi an anti-corruption inspector. Teams of Delhi Police will be on standby for any assistance,” Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal posted on his official Facebook page on Wednesday.
“With just a phone, every citizen has the power to expose the corrupt. The purpose is to create fear in the mind of every corrupt individual,” he said.
As the latest reforming step to refresh the Indian democracy, Kejriwal launched the helpline number 011-27357169 on Wednesday evening. The helpline operates from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The service also guides people on how to conduct sting operations on corrupt officials.
During the oath taking ceremony the youngest chief minister of India’s national capital vowed to take strict actions against corrupt officials. “Anti corruption helpline is in action, as promised at the time of taking oath,” said a post on the Facebook page of Kejriwal-led Aam Admi Party (AAP).
“Till 3 p.m. 3,904 calls were received by the helpline. A total of 53 major cases of corruption have been reported till now,” the AAP’s Facebook post said, which was “liked” by 7,555 people and shared over 2,000 times.
The AAP leader’s page is currently followed by 1.2 million users, and the count is increasing with each day.
