Edward Norton was named amongst the Top 25 Best Global Philanthropists by Barron’s, the financial publication, for his fundraising website Crowdrise.
Crowdrise is about volunteering, raising money for charity, and having the most fun in the world while doing it, according to its website, and offers a range of “inspiring” projects to visit and the opportunity to start up your own.
Norton, probably better known for movies like The Painted Veil and The Fight Club, has been busy raising millions of dollars for charity, and described the site as the “Facebook of philanthropy” in a CNN interview.
“If you don’t give back, no one will like you,” Norton told CNN. “That is our core philosophy.”
Crowdrise began in 2009 when Norton and colleagues set up a fundraising campaign based on the New York City Marathon. In less than eight weeks, they had raised $1.2 million for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.
The team was so impressed by the results, they opened up the web platform for everyone “to raise money for over a million different charities, and where charitable organizations can start events, team fundraisers, and turn their base of grassroots supporters into a base of grassroots fundraisers,” the website explains.
CNN will run a special one-hour show called Big Stars, Big Giving on Dec. 24 and 25, including interviews with Norton, Nicole Kidman, and Justin Bieber to gain an insight into celebrity philanthropy and how the public can get involved.
