An earthquake hit today in Southern California, jolting residents in San Jacinto and Hemet in particular.

The 3.7 magnitude quake hit at about 7:39 p.m. PDT, followed by a 2.9 magnitude aftershock, reported the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit at a depth of 8.3 miles just one mile north-northwest of San Jacinto. The epicenter was located in a residential neighborhood in the 900 block of Yorkshire Lane.

“It felt like it was like, ‘Boom!’” a man who lives in a home in that neighborhood told NBC. “It maybe lasted like 15 seconds.”

The quake likely hit along the San Jacinto Fault Zone, a major strike-slip fault zone that runs through San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial Counties. It’s a component of the larger San Andreas system.

The quake also hit three miles north of Hemet, four miles north-northwest of East Hemet, and five miles northwest of Valle Vista, the agency said.

Residents in the area said that they felt the quake.

Carrie called in to CBS from Murrieta to say that she felt the quake.

“It didn’t feel that bad at all, but I felt something,” she said.

Jackie in Yucaipa told the network in a text message, describing the quake: “One hard shake and a couple weak shakes. But boy did the windows rattle!”

People also reported on Twitter that the quake was felt throughout Menifee, Diamond Bar, and parts or Orange County.

However, other users said they didn’t feel anything in Palm Springs or Palm Desert.

Early Tuesday morning, another earthquake hit California, this time in the Napa area. The 2.6 magnitude quake hit five miles south-southwest of Napa, the area where a magnitude 6.0 quake hit last month.
