Dunkin Donuts has been the largest chain store in the city for at least the past seven years, and they have since grown to have 536 stores total. From 2013 to 2014, the chain opened 21 more stores in the city, according to the Center for an Urban Future’s annual chain store report.
Subway is the second largest chain in New York, and the largest nation-wide, with 468 locations in the city.
The number of chain stores increased 2013-2014 across the five boroughs at a pace far quicker than 2012-2013, and the number is growing every year. There was a 3.3 percent increase, compared to an 0.5 increase the year before.
Staten Island was the only borough where chain stores did not expand their footprint. Every other borough is home to more chain stores than last year, with Queens leading in growth (8.3) percent, followed by The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
The areas with the highest concentration of chain stores have a total of 180 retailers. Manhattan’s 10001 zip code (home of the Manhattan Mall) is tied with Staten Island’s 10314 zip code (where the Staten Island Mall resides) for the area with the most chain stores.
There are about 305 national retailers, or chain stores, in the city. About a third of them added at least one store in the past year. A few stores closed all of their New York City locations, and about 40 percent did not change the number of stores open.
