As the death toll rose to 80 on Thursday the driver of a Spanish train was under investigation by officials after it appeared he was speeding while the train derailed while going around a sharp bend.
Along with the dead there were 94 injured, 35 of those being in serious condition.
There were two train drivers, and one is under formal police investigation, a spokeswoman for Galicia’s Supreme Court told Reuters, without naming him. One of the two drivers was in the hospital but it is unclear whether it’s the same one that’s being held under investigation.
State railway company Renfe said it was too early to determine the cause of Wednesday’s crash, according to AFP, but an analysis of the footage of the crash showed that the train was speeding at least 46 miles per hour over the 50 mile per hour speed limit.
At least six Americans were injured in the crash, according to President Barack Obama.
