Doctored Boston photo: The New York Daily News is facing criticism for doctoring a photo on the cover of its Tuesday newspaper edition, showing a woman sitting in a pool of blood following the aftermath of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing.
The allegation comes after The New York Post was accused of inflating the death total to 12 people on Monday and Tuesday. The official toll was three deaths and more than 170 injured.
But in regards to the alleged Daily News doctored photo, the publication used a graphic photograph, which was taken by the Boston Globe’s John Tlmuacki. It shows a woman receiving aid surrounded by blood on the sidewalk.
Orange County Register editor Charles Apple said on Tuesday night that he questioned whether the paper doctored the image to remove some of the gore in the original. In the original photo, it shows a woman’s leg on in very bad shape and covered in blood the top left portion. But in the Daily News photo, it shows pants where the blood should be.
“Looks to me like somebody did a little doctoring of that photo to remove a bit of gore. If you can’t stomach the gore, don’t run the photo. Period,” Apple wrote.
He said that the Newark Star-Ledger used the same photo but did not apparently manipulate the image.
