Mets starter R.A. Dickey pitched seven and a third shutout innings Thursday afternoon as the New York Mets downed the Washington Nationals 3–1, in Washington, D.C. to avoid the three-game sweep.
Dickey (9-1) picked up the win and is the first big-leaguer to reach nine wins in 2012. His 2.44 ERA is now ninth-best in the majors.
Chien-Ming Wan (1-2) picked up the loss despite allowing just two runs over five-and-a-third innings for Washington. Both runs came on a fifth-inning home run by Lucas Duda that scored Kirk Nieuwenhuis, breaking the scoreless tie. The Mets added another run in the seventh when Daniel Murphy singled home David Wright to make it 3–0 Mets.
Mets closer Frank Francisco allowed a ninth-inning solo home run to Ryan Zimmerman before closing the door for his 15th save of the season.
