On February 10, Mr. Zhu Yubiao, defense lawyer for three Falun Gong practitioners, was arrested by police. Zhu has been detained at the Third Forced Labor Camp of Huadu, Guangzhou City for more than four months. His family was not notified of his whereabouts.
Defending Falun Gong Practitioners Three Times
On June 12, Minghui Net reported that Zhu Yubiao defended Falun Gong practitioner Gao Huanlian in Taihe District Court of Guangzhou on June 8, 2005, becoming the first lawyer to openly defend a Falun Gong practitioner in Guangdong Province.
According to people who attended the court session, Zhu pointed out to the court that documents from the Chinese Communist Party cannot replace the law and constitution of China; the court should take the constitution as a criterion and the rulings must based on facts.
After Zhu’s non-guilty argument and request for her acquittal, both the judge and the prosecutor were speechless. The accuser even said, “If you like it, you can practice it at home.”
Later, Zhu represented Falun Gong practitioners Wei Yinxin and Song Hongfeng. Unfortunately, Zhu could only defend Wei because both cases were scheduled at the same time in two different courtrooms.
Department of Justice Labels Zhu a ‘Counter-Revolutionary’
During the process of defending three Falun Gong practitioners, the local police intensified their monitoring procedures. Body searches, ID checks, and inquiries became a routine for every attendant in the court. Cameras were also set up on both inside and outside the court.
Later, the Department of Justice in Guangdong labeled Zhu a “counter-revolutionary.” While the leading law firm in Guangdong defended Zhu on that specific issue, it also advised him not to get involved in the future.
Since then, Zhu has been monitored by the Public Security Bureau. He was transferred to Hengyi Law Firm in October 2006.
Detained for Over Four Months
In January 2007, Zhu was involved in the case of another Falun Gong practitioner, Lin Zhiyong. Zhu went to Lin’s home and was arrested on February 10. Zhu’s home was ransacked on March 2, but no evidence was found.
Since then Zhu has been at the Third Forced Labor Camp of Huado, Guangzhou City.
