Deep Dive (Oct. 7): Sen. Chris Murphy Blasts Short-Term Deal on Debt Limit

Lawmakers reached a deal Thursday to temporarily end the debt ceiling debate. That’s because default would be financially catastrophic for the economy and millions of Americans. The proposal is a short-term increase of the debt ceiling until December. But not everyone is on board. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said, “That sounds like a terrible idea ... just pushing this crisis off for a couple of months sounds like a disaster.” The emerging agreement sets the stage for a sequel in December. Congress will again face pressing deadlines to fund the government and raise the debt limit before heading home for the holidays.

Ten governors met at the Texas–Mexico border Wednesday. They called on the Biden administration to take action on the southern border. They want the administration to fully reimplement the “remain in Mexico” program; resume construction of the border wall; stop the release of illegal immigrants into the U.S. interior; dedicate additional judges and other resources to clear the growing backlog of asylum cases; and deploy more federal officers to the border.

Deliveries could be slowing down as dozens of cargo ships sit off Southern California waiting to be unloaded. Not only are the ships idling, prices of goods are going up. American consumers are back after the COVID-19 slump of 2020, and now they are buying with force. But the supply chain is struggling to catch up.
