Calling for liberty, thousands took to the streets in Cuba over the weekend, protesting the communist regime. It comes amid reports of gas, electricity, and vaccine shortages across the country. In response, Cuba’s leader blamed the protests on a foreign smear campaign from the United States. President Joe Biden issued a statement Monday, calling “on the Cuban regime to hear their people and serve their needs at this vital moment rather than enriching themselves.” Sen. Marco Rubio, who is of Cuban descend, said Cubans are rising up because they want freedom.
Thirty Republican House members are asking the Labor Department for an official audit of unemployment insurance fraud during the pandemic. The CEO of ID.me told Axios that as many as 50 percent of unemployment payments might have been stolen. The Labor Department admitted in a memo that around $5.4 billion in unemployment insurance benefits were likely lost to fraud between March and October 2020.
