If you have been keeping on top of the Milwaukee music scene, you probably have had a chance to hear DDS rap. And, you probably noticed that his lyrics are incredibly powerful. That is because he is writing from his own, real life experiences. He pours himself into each word he writes, yet still manages to leave the audience wanting more, because they know he is still holding something back. His album, The World is Yourz, speaks to listeners on a number of different levels. There are highs and lows, spirituality, sexuality, controversy, and more, told in a way that only a great story teller can.
Creating this album was cathartic for DDS, who was on a downward spiral of depression and pill addiction. In fact, you might say that it was through this album that he was able to relate his life experiences, and get on the road to healing, as well as helping others. This was actually what he started out doing in the first place. He had been a counsellor at Marquette University, helping low income students with the same background as himself, from the same areas where he grew up in Milwaukee.
Because he was proof that they could rise above their situations, the students began to relate to DDS more than they did the other counsellors. This made the others jealous, and all of the sudden, DDS found himself without a job. His supervisor stated that DDS was “too charismatic for the program” and that he was “bending it in half”. The funny thing is, the supervisor also told him that he should try to get into show business!
Being forced out of a job that he loved, helping kids from his own community, DDS soon learned that the other counsellors were also bad-mouthing him to the students. They told the students that he didn’t really care about them, and after that, he found that he couldn’t find work anywhere. So, he decided to work for himself, forming his own music company. He says that the music saved his life, and he wants to reach others with his music. The World is Yourz may be the first installment from his label, Elevator Muzik, but it definitely won’t be the last.
DDS writes about true life experiences, including relationships, motivation, community issues, and more. “No Doubt (Hit ‘Em)” deals with how DDS feels when he’s not on medication, hallucinations etc. “Doll (hating u)” offers a look into his view on relationships. In “Avenues of Fear”, we learn about the time he was caught in bed with another man’s girlfriend. Track “Investments” looks at the root of secondary education, and how sometimes the college student can just be left with the bill and heartaches of paying the bill for the rest of their lives without finding the correct career path, and how it encourages the students to pursue their true dreams in life, putting God first as the guide. DDS has learned from his experiences, and he wants to share what he has learned with the rest of the world. He doesn’t hold anything back, and you need to be prepared for some offensive language, which DDS makes no apologies for. He has no intention of changing who he is for the sake of being politically correct.
DDS was recently featured in an episode of Milwaukee Un-PLUGGED (episode 3). This is a reality TV show, created by none other than Darick “DDS” Spears. It includes clips of him checking out the scene in Milwaukee, and even some of his own comedy sketches.
