Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price wins the 2012 AL Cy Young Award. This is Price’s first Cy Young Award.

David Price received 153 points (14 first-place votes), Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander finished in second with 149 points (13 first-place votes), and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Jered Weaver finished in third with 70 points (0 first-place votes).

Price, 27, was the number one overall selection in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. On September 14, 2008, Price would make his major league debut against the New York Yankees and the first hit he gave up was a home run to shortstop Derek Jeter. Coincidentally, in 2011, Price would also give up Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit, also a home run. David Price would be on the postseason roster in 2008 and would record his first postseason win and first two postseason saves before recording his first regular season win or save.

In 2012, David Price was selected to his third All-Star Game and pitched a scoreless inning of work. Price recorded his 20th win on September 30, 2012. The win would make him the first pitcher in Tampa Bay Rays franchise history with 20 wins in a single season. David Price finished the season with a 20-5 record with an American League leading 2.56 ERA.
