Zip across Foley Square on a 160-foot cable cord this August and take part in the New York City Department of Transportation’s (DOT) fifth annual Summer Streets.

Saturdays, on Aug. 4, 11, and 18, free outdoor events will take place throughout the city’s streets from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and Park Avenue will be closed to traffic to allow biking, running, dancing, and playing in the streets. Activities will be centered on six locations, called rest stops.

The Uptown Rest Stop at Park Avenue and 51st Street will start off the day with a Tai Chi class, followed by a series of dance lessons including the Bachata and Salsa.

The 40th Street Rest Stop on Park Avenue will take a slightly quieter approach, with massage therapy through noon, and a restorative yoga and meditation workshop.

Bikers can go to the Midtown Rest Stop at Park Avenue and 25th Street for free bike repairs, free bike and rollerblade rentals, lessons, and a water station.

The Astor Stage at the Astor Place Rest Stop on Lafayette Street will feature an urban art installation and various workout sessions from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The REI Adventure Zone at the SoHo Rest Stop on Spring and Lafayette streets will feature a rock climbing wall, free bike rentals, and bike workshops.

The Foley Square Rest Stop at Duane and Worth streets will host a variety of workshops and performances, from a dance cardio workout to a Taiwanese Temple Fair, all within the proximity of a mobile playground and 160-foot zip line.

Summer Streets lasts three consecutive Saturdays in August and encourages the use of NYC’s streets and public spaces—an event modeled after global celebrations, according to the DOT.
