NEW YORK—On the 100th anniversary of the District Attorneys Association, several hundred enthusiastic supporters and city officials joined a host of district attorneys and court officials to honor long-time Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau on the steps of the County Courthouse on Centre Street on Wednesday afternoon.
District Attorneys Association of the State of New York President Kate Hogue, of Warren County, addressed the crowd gathered around DA Morganthau: “On our centennial, we are pleased to gather our members from across the state to honor our colleague Robert Morgenthau who, for more than one third of our existence, has served with great distinction as District Attorney for the people of New York County. By his tireless efforts over the past 35 years, he has left an imprint on the community of prosecutors who are here with us today ... He is truly an inspiration to every attorney past, and present, who has the extraordinary privilege of serving as a prosecutor.”
Morgenthau took office in 1975. Prior to taking office, DA Morgenthau served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A graduate of Yale Law School, he took a turn at private practice before being appointed United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York by John F. Kennedy. In 1974 he won his first of nine consecutive elections, making him the longest-serving District Attorney in the history of New York County.
The new award, named in his honor, was created by the DA’s Association by unanimous vote, and is to be presented to outstanding prosecutors, four from designated regions of the state, who “best exemplify that ideal,” said Hogan.
Morganthau said, “I am honored that these awards are made in my name. I think that it is important to recognize outstanding assistant district attorneys throughout the state that live up to the credo of protecting the public and administering the laws fairly without fear or favor.”
“I’m glad these awards are being made to the key working people” continued Morgenthau, “We are dependent on this great group of people who day in and day out seek commitment to justice. Thank you for this great honor.”
