NEW YORK—Cornell NYC Tech is working with Hudson Companies and Related Companies to build the first residential building on its Roosevelt Island campus.
The sustainable dorm will have 350 units—including micro-units— for students, staff, and faculty. The developers are planning to add a gym, bike room, lounge, roof deck, and work rooms.
The building is being designed by New York-based Handel Architects, and energy expert Buro Happold will be assisting with the sustainability strategy.
“This building has the potential to be a game changer in residential design, combining high performance/passive technologies with a high degree of user control and accountability,” stated Gary Handel of Handel Architects.
Construction of the campus is set to begin early 2014, while work on the dorm will start 2015. When complete, the campus will house about 2,000 full-time graduate students.
The campus will open in 2017, with the other phases of construction aiming for completion in 2034. Classes began earlier this year in a temporary Chelsea space donated by Google.
Roosevelt Island Operating Corp recently approved a land transfer to Cornell NYC Tech to build the campus.
