Former Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson died on February 10 in his native Texas.
Wilson’s role in arming people in Afghanistan against the Soviet invasion of the 1980s is dramatized in the 2007 movie Charlie Wilson’s War.
Wilson, who served on the House Appropriations Committee, made the liberation of Afghanistan from Soviet oppression his personal crusade. He secured funds to buy weapons for the mujahedeen, enabling them to evict the Soviet invaders.
Wilson had a heart transplant in 2007, and heart disease seems to have caused his death. He developed difficulty breathing while attending a meeting in Texas, and died at Memorial Medical Center-Lufkin, according to news reports. He was 76 years old.
Mr. Wilson represented the 2nd Congressional district in east Texas in the U.S. House from 1973 to 1996. He is survived by sister and his wife.
