NEW YORK—One ConEdison employee died in a manhole explosion at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday in Brooklyn. The incident occurred at the intersection of Euclid and Sutter Avenues as workers were splicing cables together inside the manhole, according to the utility provider’s spokeswoman Elizabeth Clark.

The other worker, who sustained injuries, was treated and released from Brookdale Hospital. The families have been notified.

The cause of the explosion is yet unknown.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased worker and his injured colleague,” read a statement issued by ConEdison. “Our crews work in potentially dangerous conditions 24-7 and perform their jobs with extreme dedication and attention to safety. We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident.”
