The white smoke emerging from the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel chimney and the subsequent ringing of the bells on Wednesday has signaled that the Conclave has elected a new pope of the Catholic Church.

It has not yet been announced who the new pope is. Some rituals will be performed within the Sistine Chapel before the new pope emerges to address the crowd.

Thousands cheered in St. Peter’s Square as the smoke emerged.

When Pope Benedict XVI was chosen, the smoke appeared, but a delay in the ringing of the bells created some confusion as to whether a pope had actually been chosen. There was no such confusion on Wednesday.
