GREENVILLE, S. C.—Shen Yun Performing Arts graced the stage of the Peace Center. David Squalli,president of Treat Med-a manufacturer of systems for bio-medical waste treatment, said he had fun and felt relaxed at the Shen Touring Company performance.
New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to restore the 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese music and dance.
“In a collection of short pieces, audiences travel from the Himalayas to tropical lake-filled regions; from the legends of the culture’s creation over 5,000 years ago through to the story of Falun Dafa in China today; from the highest heavens down to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom,” according to Shen Yun’s website.
Lola Macia, manages a family and also holds an interior design degree. Mrs. Macia said she really liked seeing Chinese culture through Chinese dance. “It’s really interesting and exciting,” said Mrs. Macia.
Mrs. Macia said she especially liked the dance Sleeves of Silk. Mr. Squalli said he also particularly liked that one. It displays the technique called ‘water sleeves,“ in which ”the effect is akin to fluttering wings or trailing ripples, a visual echo of the performer as she glides from one movement to the next,” according to the program.
Mr. Squalli, originally from Casablanca, Morocco, said he felt “purity” and a theme of taking a stand for what is right in the performance.
According to Shen Yun’s website, “concepts of ”man and nature must be in balance, respect the heavens to know one’s destiny,“ and the five cardinal virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faithfulness,” are principles that have played out in traditional Chinese culture.
Mrs. Macia said she felt an “elegance and classiness of the Chinese culture.”
Currently, New York-based Shen Yun is unable to perform in China due to the communist rule in the country.
Traditional Chinese culture was almost wiped out due to the violent movements carried out by the communist regime. Shen Yun seeks to revive the virtues woven in traditional Chinese culture.
“Justice always survives … always,” said Mr. Squalli.
