Fort Jefferson, located on a remote island hours from Florida’s Key West, served as a prison during the Civil War. Now it is a haven for wildlife and coral reef, and it is also the darkest spot on the East Coast.

Without light pollution, the stars’ brilliance is unmatched. Filmmaker Harun Mehmedinovic captured Fort Jefferson as part of the crowdfunded project SKYGLOW, which aims to raise awareness about light pollution by filming the best dark-sky preserves in North America.
