Local artist Sirron Norris’s multistory mural gets unveiled Thursday at the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association’s (SPUR) Urban Center.
The mural, titled “The Art of Urbanism,” features the city as an island, showing “parts that have an important geographical impact like the waterfront, Embarcadero, and ocean beach,” Norris wrote in an email.
“The whole concept for the mural was taking these core concepts of urbanism and reinterpreting them through a lens of humor, joy, and creativity,” Norris wrote.
Norris started this particular mural last December, which is one in a series of 16 Cartoon Literalism pieces he has painted throughout the city. His work has been featured in popular shows like FOX’s “Bob’s Burgers” and PBS “Newshour.” His most notable mural, “Victorion: El Defensor de la Mission,” is now a popular design in clothing and retail throughout the Bay Area.
The piece highlights the importance of public transportation, and the “union of natural and urban environments and different way they can coexist,” mixing plant life with urban elements, Norris wrote.
“It’s a vision of the future of San Francisco,” Norris wrote. “It says as a city we can advance ourselves and become more aware technologically and efficiently without losing the character of our city.”
