NEW YORK—New York City acquired the third and final section of the High Line from CSX Corporation Tuesday, allowing an expansion to the city’s most unique park.
“The transfer of ownership is a historic moment, one that brings us one step closer toward our ultimate goal: preserving the entire High Line, and transforming it into a mile-and-a-half of public open space connecting three neighborhoods along Manhattan’s West Side,” said Robert Hammond, co-founder of Friends of the High Line, in a statement.
The High Line, which currently runs to West 30th Street will now run to West 34th Street—wrapping around the West Side Yards.
Design concepts for the newest section of the park were submitted in March 2012. Architects suggested a “crossroads” or meeting place west of 10th Avenue and 30th Street. There were also multiple suggestions for a large open space at the 10th Avenue spur, directly above 10th Avenue and 30th Street. An amphitheater, a flex pavilion, or a floating plane (a 4-foot-high deck to get raised views), were three suggestions.
No designs have been finalized. Groundbreaking is expected this year. If fundraising goals are met, the project should be completed by 2014.
