Christian Bale, the 37-year-old English actor, won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Fighter at the 83rd annual Academy Awards on Sunday.

Bale played Dicky Eklund, a former professional boxer, in The Fighter, the sports drama released on Dec. 17.

Bale beat out John Hawkes of Winter’s Bone, Jeremy Renner of The Town, Mark Ruffalo of The Kids Are All Right, and Geoffrey Rush of The King’s Speech.

The Academy Awards, which started at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 27, is considered the most prestigious award of the American movie industry. Honoring movies released in 2010, “Hollywood’s biggest night” introduces the winners in the 24 Oscar categories.

The Oscar presentation, hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco, is televised live in more than 200 countries.
