Petition by 300 hundred households from Zhouguantun Village

Chinese democracy activists have expressed support for the group of 300 village households in China who signed a petition to support Falun Gong, later termed the “Brave 300,” for violating a political taboo that is often enforced with violence.

Democracy activist Wu Yuqin from Guizhou province said the development reflects the Chinese public’s sympathy for Falun Gong practitioners who are still suffering persecution. “The communist government’s persecution of Falun Gong is against the law. Because the government does not follow the laws, they can choose to suppress whomever they wish. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s persecution of Falun Gong is cruel and unjust.”

Wu said that she would have signed the petition too if she had the chance. “I believe that this is an act of conscience. Today, it is 300 people, tomorrow it will be 3,000, 30,000, and then the whole country. This is what the Chinese people are demanding now!”

Wei Zhongping, a democracy activist from Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province, said that under Party rule many people are unwilling or afraid of extending their hand to help others.

The signing of the petition by 300 village households in Zhouguantun village is the most recent resistance to the long campaign by the Party to try to wipe out the spiritual practice. The petition was a response to the arrest of a fellow villager, Wang Xiaodong, who practices Falun Gong.

“Because the CCP has unrestrained power, it can continuously infringe upon people’s rights. Those who are willing to help victims of suppression, in the eyes of the CCP, are fighting against the government,” Wei said, explaining the frenzied response by Party authorities to the villagers. Security forces have rounded up those who signed the petitions and forced them to sign retraction statements.

Beijing democracy activist Ye Jinghuan said that everyone is entitled to freedom of belief. “I am strongly against the persecution of Falun Gong… everyone should be allowed to expose the truth about a cruel persecution. People should not be arrested in order to hide that truth.”

Ye said that he condemns the Chinese authorities’ recent arrest of Wang Xiaodong’s sister, Wang Xiaomei.

Editor’s Note: When Chongqing’s former top cop, Wang Lijun, fled for his life to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu on Feb. 6, he set in motion a political storm that has not subsided. The battle behind the scenes turns on what stance officials take toward the persecution of Falun Gong. The faction with bloody hands—the officials former CCP head Jiang Zemin promoted in order to carry out the persecution—is seeking to avoid accountability for their crimes and to continue the campaign. Other officials are refusing any longer to participate in the persecution. Events present a clear choice to the officials and citizens of China, as well as people around the world: either support or oppose the persecution of Falun Gong. History will record the choice each person makes.
