It was the largest gathering in Beijing since the Tiananmen Square Massacre. 10,000 Falun Gong practitioners peacefully gathered around the central appeals office next to Zhongnanhai on April 25, 1999 to appeal for their right to freely practice Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa. Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin used this as a pretext to launch a nationwide crackdown that lead to a brutal persecution that continues to this day, and allowed the creation of the gestapo-like 610 Office.
