PHOENIX, Ariz.—“I loved the show,” said CFO Trish (Patricia) Ellenburg after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts the afternoon of March 10 at the Orpheum Theatre.
With a mission of revitalizing China’s ancient divinely inspired culture dating back 5,000 years, Shen Yun will perform in over 100 cities and 20 countries this season. Through the performing arts of dance, music, and song, one is taken on a journey through the various ethnic regions, empires, legends, and mystical realms.
The Shen Yun Orchestra is unique in that it fuses classical Eastern instruments such as the erhu, pipa, and dizi with Western symphonic instruments resulting in an ethereal sound that inspires the imagination and often touches the audience in profound ways.
“I think the orchestra was amazing,” said Ms. Ellenburg. “We loved the blending of the Western and Eastern instruments,” adding that it was “absolutely beautiful.”
Shen Yun’s costume artists collect countless designs of traditional attire, ranging from those of emperors, ministers, and generals to the everyday clothing of the common people, states Shen Yun’s website.
“The costumes were incredible. The colors, the movements, the flowing, the visual impact was amazing,” said Ms. Ellenburg.
Classical Chinese dance embraces rich sophisticated movements not only visually expressing the story but offering a brief glimpse into the hearts and minds of the performers.
Ms. Ellenburg said she was “awestruck” by the performance. “Overwhelmed with the beauty of what we were seeing, just generally in awe.”
The dance of the Phoenix Fairies stood out most for Ms. Ellenburg, adding that the combination of the colorful royal blue and orange costumes with the music was “just wonderful.”
Friends had invited Ms. Ellenburg to see Shen Yun and prior to the performance she said that she “didn’t know much about Shen Yun or the Chinese culture.” She said she felt like she learned a lot and that she had “gained an appreciation for the culture. I had a very shallow knowledge of just how old the culture is; especially the different dances from the different geographical areas of the country.”
Ms. Ellenburg said she would “absolutely” recommend to family and friends to see Shen Yun. “It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Just awe-inspiring.”
