A 50-year-old man was beaten near his car in Chicago as witnesses shouted, “You voted Trump.” He described what happened to media outlets on Friday.
David Wilcox told NBC Chicago that the attack began as a traffic accident in Chicago’s Homan Square neighborhood before 1 p.m. Wednesday. A woman in a black car sideswiped him. When he got out, he said that “all hell broke loose.”
“I came out very courteously and nicely,” Wilcox told the NBC affiliate. “She was the first to throw a punch and I wasn’t expecting that.”
Another woman and three men emerged from the vehicle. “The next thing I knew, I was getting hit from both sides,” he said. “They made a coordinated attack on both sides and started hitting me.”
Wilcox said that no one stepped in to help while he was attacked.
“I heard a lady yell something about ’that guy is a Trump supporter,‘ and I turned to her and said, ’This is between me and her, it has nothing to do with you,'” Wilcox said.
Wilcox, who is white, also said, “So what if I’m a Trump supporter? That doesn’t have nothing to do with this,'” according to CBS.
“The lady actually threw the first shot,” he added. “Then they were all hitting me.”
Video footage of the incident, which made the rounds on a number of websites this week, appear to corroborate Wilcox’s statement. A woman can be heard saying that he “voted Trump” as he was being attacked by a group of people, who all appear to be African-American.
“I have all kinds of lumps back here,” Wilcox added. “My body is badly hurting.”
Another video appeared to show Wilcox describing what happened, while he showed the bruises on his face and body.
