Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is close to becoming the University of Florida’s offensive coordinator, ESPN and the Gainesville Sun reported on Friday.

Sources told the sports news agency and the Florida local newspaper that Weis, who is in his first year as offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, will be heading south and be managing the offensive for Will Muschamp’s Gators.

Weis is slated to take the job, but there is no agreement yet between the two parties yet, ESPN said.

Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said that he was “unaware of anything” regarding Weis’ departure and said “it would be news to me” if the rumors were true, the Sun reported.

Weis has led a Chiefs offense that is ranked 11 in the NFL in points per game (23.7) and 9th in NFL in yards per game (359.6). Kansas City also has the league’s best rushing attack and averages 167.5 rushing yards per game.

ESPN’s Bill Williamson opined that the loss of Charlie Weis could be a “big blow” for the Chiefs, who are bound for the playoffs after already clinching the AFC West. Last season, the Chiefs were last in their division with an abysmal 4-12 record. Weis did not sign on until this season.

Weis is best known for his stint as head coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 2005 to 2009.

He was also a coach with the Giants, Jets, and Patriots, and nabbed three Super Bowl rings in his tenure with New England.
