It may cost as much as $19 million to buy out former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, according to reports.
Weis, who is the current Kansas coach, got a payment of more than $2 million as part of the separation agreement between him and Notre Dame after he was fired in 2009, reported the Chicago Tribune. It means he was paid nearly $10.8 million as part of the agreement until 2011, according to USA Today, citing the same tax documents.
Notre Dame is slated to hand out “additional annual payments” to Weis until 2015, meaning he will be likely paid around $18,966,867, according to the Tribune report.
Current coach Brian Kelly, who took Notre Dame to the BCS title game this year, was paid just over $1 million between 2011 and 2012. “The current head football coach is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University,” Notre Dame noted.
Both reports note that Weis, who was head coach of Notre Dame from 2005 to 2009, was paid more than Kelly in 2011.
Weis signed a six-year contract worth a reported $2 million per year for Notre Dame in 2004. He was fired in 2009 after a 6-6 season with the Fighting Irish.
