Central Park’s raccoons will get rabies vaccinations after a recent outbreak sparked concern. According to New York’s Department of Health, there have been 39 recorded raccoons infected with the virus in Central Park and Upper Manhattan.

Starting Tuesday, wildlife experts will humanely trap, tag, and vaccinate the raccoons in an attempt to contain the outbreak for the next one or two months.

In the past two months, rabid raccoons bit and infected one person and one dog. Another person took a raccoon to the vet and was subsequently infected with rabies. Treatment was administered to the victims and none became sick.
