April 22 marks the 43rd Earth Day, and this year, organizers are urging people of the world to “Mobilize the Earth.”

The Earth Day Network, which coordinates the annual global event, is pushing for everyone to show their love for our planet by signing the Global Energy Petition, a plea to international leaders to invest in renewable energy and increase energy efficiency. The petition will be presented at the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development in June.

In advance of the summit, the Earth Day Network also aims to register one billion acts of kindness toward Mother Earth as part of its “A Billion Acts of Green” campaign, which was launched in 2010. The campaign surpassed its halfway point in February 2012 and needs but just more than 40 million pledges in the next few months.

Pledges of eco-friendly acts have ranged from reducing waste and exercising one’s green thumb to organizing grassroots movements.

Since the first Earth Day in 1970 when 20 million Americans rallied for environmental awarenesss and sustainability, the event has grown into a celebration among over 190 countries.
