LOS ANGELES—Carole Wells, famous actress, singer, and writer, attended the Saturday afternoon Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

“It’s fabulous, beautiful, I love the colors, I love the dancing. ... I love it,” said the actress.

“Their dancing is wonderful,” she said, “everyone should come see it.”

Ms. Wells started acting when she was 12, and has appeared in many television shows and movies. One of her more famous roles was in the Barbara Streisand movie Funny Lady.

But she has expanded to other pursuits, including writing books, of which she has multiple ones forthcoming, including one about a trip to China. She has also worked toward creating video games that educate and enlighten children, as well as supported various charities and humanitarian causes, including through meeting with heads of state.

“It’s so inspiring, because besides the visual beauty, the story is good because it does tell the sad side of what’s happened in China, along with the happy side.”

Shen Yun draws upon China’s 5,000 years of culture, including human rights stories depicting the persecution of Falun Gong, an ancient mind-body practice that is still persecuted in China today.

“It’s very special, and I think everyone should see it, and I’m happy to see so many Chinese people here seeing it,” she said. “I’m sure everyone around the world will want to see this show.”

She came to the show with her friend, Robert Singer, a prolific Internet writer whose articles covers politics, the environment, and the financial world. He also has written a forthcoming book about the Federal Reserve.

Mr. Singer said the show was beyond the norm: “I don’t think the right word would be impressed—it’s almost a masterpiece, watching those people.”

“I would say that everyone should see it,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve ever gone to a ballet or a musical, you should go see this.”
