The Vaughan Mills shopping mall will soon be home to Canada’s first Legoland, complete with its own 4D cinema, Lego rides, brick pool, and other attractions.

The Legoland Discovery Centre will be a 34,000-square-foot “highly interactive and educational two to three-hour indoor experience,” a release from the company says. The centre is meant primarily for children 3 to 10 years of age.

The $12-million project will also include a unique Miniland exhibit that showcases iconic buildings and the Toronto skyline. Jamie McLean, marketing director of Vaughan Mills, says local Lego fans will also have a part in the project.

“In the fall they will be running a contest to find a master builder from local talent who will get to build … part of … of Miniland,” McLean says.

The centre will be set up in place of the Nascar Speed Park that was located at the Small Towns Neighbourhood 4 part of the mall. Construction of the site is set to begin in the next few weeks and the centre will be open to the public in the spring of 2013.

Legoland is owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments Group, the company behind Madame Tussauds wax museums and the London Eye as well as around 90 other attractions in 19 countries. The Vaughan Mills Legoland will be the company’s first project in Canada, and the ninth Legoland in the world.

Merlin is currently operating Legoland Discovery Centres in Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta, and Kansas City, as well as Legoland theme parks in Florida and California.

Glenn Earlam, managing director of Merlin’s Midway Attractions Operating Group, noted in a statement that the company is also considering two more locations in Canada for future projects.
