Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Treasurer Wayne Swan and Queensland Senator Jan McLucas announced that Cairns will host a G-20 Finance Ministers’ and Central Bank Governors’ meeting in 2014.
The meeting will take place in the popular tourist destination in the lead-up to the G-20 summit in Brisbane, which is likely to be held at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre and attended by approximately 4000 delegates and 3000 media.
The ABC reported that Mr Swan expected at least 2000 people would attend the meeting in Cairns, providing a welcome boost to the local accommodation, hospitality, transport and tourism sectors.
The G-20 meetings are attended by officials representing over 80 per cent of world trade, including all of Australia’s major trading partners.
