Officials say Amar'e Stoudemire’s brother, Hazell, died in a car crash, according to a report on the NBA’s website.
A Florida Highway Patrol report said Hazell was driving a car that crashed into the back of a trailer being towed by a truck early Monday morning.
The report said that Hazell Stoudemire, who lived in Lakeland, Fla., was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
Stoudemire has already gone to Florida and missed Monday night’s game against Utah. Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz said he doesn’t know how long he will be away.
Stoudemire who has struggled this season currently averages 18.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game—both are his worst averages since his rookie season in 2002–2003.
