Car-share service Car2Go launched just one month ago on Oct. 25 in Brooklyn, and now has over 13,000 members.
There are 400 blue-and-white smart cars parked on the streets of over a third of Brooklyn—from Greenpoint and along the waterfront all the way down past Gravesend. It is a membership-based service and members can opt to rent by the minute, hour, or day.
Members have already driven 55,000 miles, the Daimler AG-owned company announced recently. That’s the equivalent of eight cross country trips, coast-to-coast.
Barclays Center (600 trips), Prospect Park (700 trips), and Williamsburg (over 1,300 trips) are the most popular destinations so far. The furthest trips people have made are to New Jersey, Connecticut, Upstate New York, and Montauk. Members can drive the cars anywhere, but must park them back in the “home area” in Brooklyn.
Car2Go is functioning much like Citi Bike, the city’s bike sharing service—as a first and last mile transportation option. Members use it as an extension of their commute, not a replacement.
The G line is the most popular subway line to end rentals, according to new data Car2Go released. Over 300 stops have ended within a 0.1 square mile radius of the G line Broadway stop.
Brooklyn is the careshare’s fastest growing market, said Car2Go communications manager Adrianne Andang. Even before the service launched, 4,000 people had already signed up.
Just the other day, Andang said, members simultaneously started and stopped 50 trips.
Car2Go is still in talks for expanding service in the city—requests for moving to Queens are high. The service is looking at extending to off-airport parking lots and independent lots in Brooklyn.
