NEW YORK—Select bus service began rolling into the Bronx on Monday, adding quicker service to patrons on busy Webster Avenue. The select bus service, which requires riders to prepay for service at the curb, will cut eight minutes off the 45-minute, five-mile route between East Gun Hill Road Intermodal Terminal and the Bronx Hub-149 Street/Third Avenue station.

“A lot of people were skeptical, but these things are working in a lot lower times with more ridership,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The BX41 SBS is the fifth select bus service to hit the roads in New York City. Ridership is up approximately 10 percent, according to the mayor.

The improved route cost $10 million, with $7 million going to street improvement. Federal mass transit monies funded most of it.
