Denver linebacker Joe Mays has been suspended one game and fined $50,000 by the NFL for his vicious hit on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub Sunday, according to a report on the NFL’s website.
Mays not only will not play in Sunday’s contest against Oakland he can’t practice with the team, be at the practice facility, or go to the stadium during his suspension. He will be reinstated Monday.
The report also says that Mays will appeal the suspension.
Mays’ helmet-to-helmet blow in the third quarter of Denver’s 31–25 loss on Sunday, knocked Schaub’s helmet off and took a piece of his ear with it. Schaub missed one play before coming back on the field.
Mays was fined and penalized for roughing Atlanta’s Matt Ryan the previous week.
